Canning With Weck Glass Jars

Since 1900, Weck has been providing home-canning equipment in Europe with their beloved glass jars. Today, they are still at the head of the curve when it comes to glass canning. Weck is well known for their trademark simple style-meets-utilitarian design.

At MightyNest, we use Weck jars for multiple purposes. In addition to canning, we also use these for food storage. The 1 liter cylindrical canning jar is perfect for storing quinoa, millet, rice and specialty flours. And we've recently added the 79 ml size (as a even smaller substitute for the 160 ml size) which is perfect for storing bulk spices, batches of pesto or homemade balms. We're also keen on using Weck jars to store soaking salts and sugar scrubs as well.

What is so different about Weck jars? Weck glass jars are heavy and thick and resistant to chipping, not always found in other glass jars. And the lids are made of glass, as opposed to aluminum, which has been linked to brain disorders as well as behavioral abnormalities and is considered a toxic substance by the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry. Glass lids are immune to rusting and can be used to process again and again. Weck canning jars contain no BPA and are safe to use for home canning. Metal lids on many other brands of canning jars contain some BPA (bisphenol-A) for resistance to corrosion. When heated, like during the sterilization process of canning, BPA can leach out into foods, especially acidic foods. Even with small amounts of BPA, it's disconcerting to think of the cumulative effect BPA has on us: we are exposed to BPA from multiple places (receipts, canned goods, food packaging, etc.), so where we have control in avoiding the chemical, we make a concerted effort to do so.

Home canning has become a very popular and healthy way to preserve foods, especially when produce is home-grown, given to you, or available at a farmer's market in your area. When you fresh preserve foods, you can avoid additives and preservatives found in many commercial products.  Each jar contains 1 glass lid, 1 natural rubber ring and 2 stainless steel clamps. All glass jars are dishwasher and microwave safe.
