Preserving in Weck Glass Jars

Weck glass jars have been around for more than 100 years. First introduced by Johann Weck in 1900, his jars were meant to serve as a reliable and healthy way to preserve food. When properly canning food, it's important to be able to tell whether the food is hermetically sealed and Weck made this process easier and more fool-proof because of the rubber rings. When used properly, the rings create a vacuum tight seal and when processing is complete, the tabs on the rings face downward, indicating that the seal on the jars is intact.

We think Weck has surely done it right. First off, their jars are made with 3 simple and real materials: glass, natural rubber and stainless steel. The glass is thick; made to withstand boiling, sterilizing and processing over and over again.  And minimizing waste, the only component that has to be replaced between batches is the rubber ring. This stands Weck apart from other canning jars where the metal lids have to be discarded and replaced.

Secondly, Weck glass lids do not contain BPA which unfortunately line most 2-part metal canning lids that come with standard canning jars. This white coating is used for the same reason it's used in commercially canned foods found at the grocery store--it helps to prevent the lid and/or can from rusting. And of course, glass doesn't rust.

The health risks associated with higher levels of BPA in your system are leading many people to change their habits to avoid BPA. Whether using for canning or for storing foods safely, Weck glass jars are a terrific choice. The wide-mouth openings make it easy to fill and clean and because they are freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe, they're easy to use for homemade baby food (especially the smallest sizes), storing leftovers or bulk foods.
