Cooking with Kids!
The lovely folks at Barefoot Books kindly gave us one of their great card decks - Kids Kitchen: 40 Fun and Healthy Recipes to Make and Share. There are some really yummy recipes in here
, divided into 5 food group categories: Eggs & Beans, Fantastic Fruits, Milk & Dairy, Spuds & Grains and Vital Vegetables. The recipes are printed on colorful cards and come packaged in a cute cardboard flip tip box. I was away with the kids and some family and friends last week so I thought it would be a great time to try out some recipes. I picked out a few and then let the kids decide what one we would make that day. I chose: Lentil Crunchies, Mean Grean Guacamole, Cool Berry Smoothies and Apple Volcanoes. Out of these, the kids chose the Apple Volcanoes. The mamas cored the apples. The kids mixed together the ingredients for the filling: chopped apricots, raisins (we actually used dried cranberries instead), granola, and honey. Then they put the filling into their apples. We added a pat of butter to the top, forgot to prick them with a fork and then put them in the oven for 25 minutes. Then we put a marshmallow on the top of each one and baked them for another few minutes until the marshmallows got soft and goey like hot lava on our apple volcanoes. After letting them cool, they were eagerly gobbled up by the proud chefs. Can't wait to try out some more recipes!
