Ladybug Art Smock! No Yucky PVC or Lead-
06.15.10 Ladybug Art Smock! No Yucky PVC or Lead-
I am happy to see this new Apron/Art Smock from Mimi the Sardine (what a funny name!) at MightyNest. These little cover ups are perfect for finger painting marathons, wild cooking missions, or just for fun. Most of the mainstream smocks (and even in your child's school) are made from nasty vinyl, or PVC.
Vinyl is a horrible product from its production, to its use, and at the end of its usefulness in its toxic disposal. To learn more about the multiple negative effects of PVC on our health, the environment, and the workers in plants creating it, visit The Center for Health and Justice's website.
Vinyl can contain toxins such as phthalates, lead, cadmium, and these additives can easily migrate out of the product, and into humans via contact or air.
According to the CHEJ: "A new laboratory study commissioned by CHEJ found the familiar “new shower curtain smell” may be toxic to your health. The study found one PVC shower curtain can release as many as 108 volatile organic chemicals into the air. Some of these chemicals can cause developmental damage as well as damage to the liver and central nervous, respiratory, and reproductive systems."
That same smell can be found in those crinkly, shiny aprons/smocks for sale at major retailers, and most likely used at your child's school. Not this one from MightyNest! It is made from organic cotton with a water-based acrylic coating. It is lead and PVC Free and is made in USA. Woo-hoo!
They are adjustable, durable and practical aprons that grow with your child – or are great hand-me-downs. Stains wash right off this apron/art smock. It fits 2-6 years, and makes a great, safer gift for a budding artist.
So, carry on, in creative glory, and feel good about supporting environmental and human health while doing it!
