Selecting a Safer Mattress

We spend almost a third of our life in bed. (If you are a new parent this seems far from your current truth.) Could there be harmful chemicals lurking in something as seemingly benign as a mattress? Unfortunately, yes - a conventional mattress is typically made of polyurethane foam, polyester, and sometimes vinyl and is treated with chemical fire retardants. Each of which has come under recent scrutiny. Polyurethane foam has been found to off-gas volatile organic compounds (V.O.C.’s), which have been linked to respiratory irritation and other health problems, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Boric Acid, Antimony (a heavy metal), and other flame retardants that are commonly used in mattresses are readily absorbed through the skin say organic mattress advocates. Some of these chemicals, such as PBDEs, have been shown to accumulate in the body for years and have been linked to liver toxicity, thyroid dysfunction, and neurodevelopmental issues among many others.

So, does sleeping on a conventional mattress lead to one’s ultimate demise? Most likely not, but given how much time we spend in bed and how little control we have over many environmental toxins we’re exposed to on a daily basis it makes sense to us to prioritize purchasing an organic mattress. Especially since there are many wonderful (and comfy) options out there!

TAKE ACTION
• Look for an organic mattress. But beware, not all organic mattresses are created equal so shop carefully.
• Avoid chemical fire retardants in your mattress. Instead look for options that use higher-quality materials, such as wool, that are naturally flame retardant.
• Choose organic cotton bedding and wool mattress pads to accompany your mattress.

At MightyNest we provide only the best organic mattresses and bedding. No chemical flame retardants, no heavy metals, and no vinyl.
