Nerdy anatomy correction :), the bowl is half of a node, with the base of the bowl being a sheath/stem ring (or scar), and the walls of the bowl being the internode.
I sadly had to give this bowl only one star. The bowl seems like it would be very sturdy. It appears to be made from half of an internode, with the base of the bowl being the intranode. It is incredibly hard. My baby has dropped it numerous times and it did not break. Why only one star? After washing the first few times it developed a crack. I have been washing using only warm water and just the teeniest bit of detergent (only if necessary). It has not once been washed in the dishwasher. It seems that with every wash, the wood soaks up water, expands, and when it dries, it shrinks so much that the cracks develop. After about a month of use, there are now two cracks, the original one running the entire height of the bowl and threatening to split the side. Based on my experience, I expect this bowl to last three months (it has seen only moderately light use). The life could be extended by less frequent use, but then what is the point? At almost $12, this is not a good investment. Thankfully I ordered only one.
