DIY Citrus Essential Oil Recipes

Known to work wonders, essential oils contain the true essence of the plant from which they were derived.  The oils are distilled by using either water or steam and are highly concentrated. Because of this, essential oils are packaged in small bottles as only a few drops are needed at a time. The uses vary from aromatherapy to household cleaning to insect repellent to natural remedies for physical discomfort and well-being. Below are several ways to add in the many benefits of citrus essential oils to a natural remedy routine.

When using essential oils it is important to note that they are often used by diluting them with a carrier oil (sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, grapeseed oil) and then applying this blend to the skin for absorption.

GRAPEFRUIT ESSENTIAL OIL

The blood vessel-dilating effects of grapefruit essential oil are a useful remedy for menstrual cramps, headaches, bloating and muscle aches.

Stress Relieving Soak: Combine 16 oz of Epsom salts plus 20 drops of sweet orange essential oil and 10 drops of grapefruit oil. Store in a dark container and add 1/2 cup to a hot bath for some stress relief.

Menstrual Cramps: Add 2-3 drops to a carrier oil and rub on the abdomen.

BERGAMOT ESSENTIAL OIL

Bergamot essential oil contains large amounts of polyphenols which can help produce a relaxed and calm state. Bergamot is also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and helps tone the skin and heal scarring from acne or irritation.

Clarifying Clay Mask: Combine into a paste and apply to face. Let it dry for 10-15 min and then remove with warm water. Mix 1 TBSP of bentonite clay, 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar, 2-3 drops of bergamot essential oil and enough water to make a paste.

Hydrating Avocado + Honey Mask: Combine 1/2 mashed avocado, 1 TBSP of raw honey, 1 TBSP of aloe vera gel and 2-3 drops of bergamot essential oil and apply to face for 15 minutes and then remove with warm water.

SWEET ORANGE ESSENTIAL OIL

Sweet orange essential oil increases circulation, kills bacteria, improves complexion and eases anxiety.

Body Scrub: To exfoliate dead skin cells and hydrate your skin, make a body scrub with raw sugar (or salt) as your base. Add sweet almond oil (or another carrier oil) and 5-6 drops of sweet orange oil.

Face Scrub:  With post-brewed coffee grounds, mix together with 1 tsp of honey and 2-3 drops of sweet orange oil. Apply in circular motions and then rinse with warm water - 1x/week for rejuvenating dull skin.

LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL

Lemon essential oil is one of the most recognized oils because of its refreshing, energizing and uplifting scent. Lemon oil has antiseptic, antibacterial and immune stimulating properties. It's a cleaning powerhouse and a naturally detoxifying substance.

Kitchen Sink Scrub: Combine 1 TBSP of sea salt, 1 TBSP of baking soda, and 7 drops of lemon essential oil to make a paste. Scrub porcelain, stainless steel or tile and rinse.

Laundry Stain Remover: Spot treat your stain with lemon oil and immediately run through the washing machine.
