What Makes It Mighty?
- soy wax crayons
- muslin bag keeps rocks contained and easy to transport
- tactile shape promotes fine motor skills and allow for broad and bold colors
Crayon Rocks are soft, soy wax crayons made from US-grown soybeans and colored with eco-friendly mineral powders. They’re perfect shape and size for young children to use and were developed to allow children to create what they imagine with rich blendable colors; to train an efficient tripod grip for handwriting success; and to sustain our planet using renewable resources that are eco-friendly.
These vibrant crayons make beautifully textured art work similar to oil pastels. Crayon Rocks are made from soy wax combined with other plant waxes and a variety of powdered pigments to create beautiful colors. This creates a crayon that goes on smooth and blends easily.
Crayon Rocks were specially created to help fine motor development and encourage use of the thumb, first and second fingers in a tripod grip. Their shape won’t allow kids to easily grip them in a closed fist or other inappropriate grip that may hinder handwriting skills in the future. Also great for older kids (6 to 12 years) who are ready to learn the half-tones or pastel colors for the eight primaries they used first.
Choose 16 or 32 colors in a cotton muslin bag.

WARNING: Choking hazard. Not for children under 3 years.

I wasn't sure if my two year old would be able to use these since they are pretty small but she loves them and they draw so smoothly across paper. She has no problem holding them and I was pleasantly surprised that they have not been put into her mouth, she is out of that age but still sometimes curious. I still cannot give her the beeswax crayons I have because I think they smell a little too good and she still puts them into her mouth, maybe just because they have chew marks on them and encourage her to do so. But these little gems are wonderful and smell nice too without being overly smelly where she wants to taste them too. I paired them with some wooden stick colored pencils for her birthday last week and they get played with every day since. She loves her sticks and stones and they are a great addition to our nature art table. Highly recommend!
About Crayon Rocks
Owned by special needs teacher of 23 years, Barbara Lee invented Crayon Rocks after being inspired by Jan Olsen, OTR, and the Handwriting Without Tears program. She learned from Jan how important it was to develop early a good tripod grip. Handwriting skills depends upon this. Since a child's first writing tool is usually a crayon, that crayon should be one that encourages him or her to use thumb, first and second fingers in a tripod grip. This is what makes Crayon Rocks a wonderful tool for fine motor development. A really good crayon should take very little effort in applying great swaths of color to the paper. In fact, that crayon should be as much like paint as possible. Great colors that go on smoothly and easily, helping little fingers to grow strong as they spill their creative ideas on to paper. Barbara wanted a coloring tool that students with grip strength problems and disorders effecting fine motor control could use AND enjoy. Children with cerebral palsy, autism, developmental delays and various forms of learning disabilities have tested Crayon Rocks in the classroom. Parents and teachers of special needs students often tell Barbara how much their children love them.
