Elliott Homestead

“When you think about the amount of toxins that our bodies take in throughout the course of a day, it’s pretty remarkable. My morning cup o’ joe is no exception.” -Shaye Elliot

By now it’s pretty widely known that plastic leaches potentially harmful chemicals into the food and liquid that it comes in contact with, especially when they’re hot. Which is why many of us are in the process of moving away from plastic tableware, food storage, go cups and water bottles. It may have never crossed your mind, however, that many parts of the coffee maker that you’re spooning that organic shade grown java into may also made of plastic.

As a homesteader, blogger Shaye Elliott works hand in hand with nature daily so she’s acutely aware of the environmental impact of her actions. For living simply off the land, one of her mantras is: buy it once, buy it right. Meaning, when we are dedicated to making conscious, informed choices, we are less likely to get taken in by the latest trend and end up with 10 cheap gadgets that all do the same thing (but perhaps not very well!)

Read Shaye’s thoughts on a simple way to brew coffee plastic-free, reconsider your current brewing methods and join over 400 people who have taken the pledge to reduce the amount of plastic their coffee comes in contact with -- you'll earn an addition opportunity to support your school in our current challenge!
