Guide to Glass Food Storage

If Food Could Choose, Glass Would Win

Healthy eating isn't only about what you eat, but how you prep, store, and heat your food. To this day, studies continue to reveal that preparing, heating and storing your food in plastic containers can negatively affect your health. Bisphenol-A (BPA), aka the main component of polycarbonate plastic, has been linked to many health concerns including infertility, cancer and ADD. New studies are showing even BPA-free plastics are not as safe as they initially claimed.

The hard truth? Plastic food containers were originally created for a short life. Once they get scratched, discolored, or warped from heat, potentially harmful chemicals can begin to leach into your food. The harder truth? Most plastic containers end up in landfills, including the ones that attempt to be recycled. Plastic can take 1000 years to decompose*. {source: https://www.thebalance.com/how-long-does-it-take-garbage-to-decompose-2878033}

After that heavy news, we'd like to show you something better and healthier. We highly recommend and use glass containers for baking, microwaving and storing our food. Honestly, food tastes best when it's heated (or reheated) in glass. Could it be because glass is naturally free of BPA, phthalates and PVC? Or is it because glass is infinitely recyclable, sustainable, safe, durable and made from completely natural raw materials? Any way you look at it, glass is good for you, your family and, thankfully, our planet.

A few more tips for safer food storage:

  • Make sure your leftovers are properly stored in the refrigerator within two hours of cooking.
  • If you have a lot of leftover food, separate it into a few smaller shallow containers. This will help to cool foods faster and reduce the risk of contamination.
  • In most cases, it's better to wash your produce just before eating. If you wash it prior to storing it in the refrigerator, residual moisture can accelerate spoilage.
