Natural Bedtime Routine

Many of us with kids have been there: it’s the middle of the night and blurry-eyed and sleep-deprived, you’re called upon to change the sheets...again. While we can’t provide a solution from avoiding this entirely, we can share this brilliant trick from Katie Kimball, the writer behind natural living blog Kitchen Stewardship.

A brilliant time-saver

As a mother of 4, Katie has a lot of experience in this area. In her home she does this “double-sheeting” trick to make nighttime bed changing quick and easy so everyone can get right back to bed. Here’s how to make a kid’s bed the Katie way:

1. Cover the mattress with a waterproof pad.

2. Stretch the fitted sheet over that.

3. Add a second waterproof pad.

4. Layer on a second fitted sheet.

In her home all the kids’ beds are made this way regardless of how old they are. As Katie says, “you never know when you’ll get a surprise stomach bug in the middle of the night...it’s a lot easier on everyone if you can just whip off a layer and throw the whole mess in the tub until morning instead of having to remake the whole bed.”

A safer sleep

Protecting mattresses from any sort of wetness is essential. If they can’t fully dry, they invite mold, mildew and fungus to develop. Kids, especially in their early years, spend several hours sleeping so it’s important to use organic, non-toxic materials when making their beds. An organic wool puddle pad naturally resists wetness to protect your mattress and isn’t treated with any chemicals, polyurethane, flame retardants, or other synthetics. We recommend layering the organic wool puddle pad directly on your mattress, then adding a mattress pad on top of the mattress.
