Replacing Plastic Food Storage

Having a well-stocked, organized pantry is key for anyone trying to eat healthy. Kelly Bejelly from Paleo cooking blog A Girl Worth Saving knows this well—successfully eating unprocessed and cooking grain-free, whole foods forces her to keep a pantry in tip-top shape. She shares with us her simple tips for managing a Paleo (or any) pantry. Her first tip guarantees you'll never find yourself overstocked in one ingredient and empty-handed in another again!

5 Tips for Managing a Paleo Pantry

1. Diligently use a pantry inventory checklist attached to a clipboard in or near your pantry. This simple step is a huge help for meal planning and will prevent duplicating ingredients you already have on hand. Download a free printable inventory checklist from Kelly!

2. To keep foods for the longest period, store in a cool, dark, dry area.

3. Buy in bulk. It allows you to buy only what you need, keeping pantry ingredients fresh. Plus it saves money!

4. Store food in clear glass containers. Here's why glass is the best material for food storage:

  • Airtight
  • Easy to clean and dishwasher-safe
  • No risk of harmful petrochemicals leaching into your food
  • Cost effective
  • Eco-friendly

5. Label jars with the ingredient and store date. Use the oldest stock first and make sure to rotate your pantry so ingredients stay fresh.

4 Jars for Dry Goods

Here are 4 of our favorite glass storage containers for dry goods and why each earns their space in the kitchen or pantry:

Glass Storage Containers by Simax

Lightweight glass jars by Simax are ideal for nuts, seeds, or supplements best stored in the fridge. Easy and light enough to hold or pour with one hand.

Clip Top Jars by Kilner

Opening and closing clip top jars for everything from alternative flours to nuts is satisfying. There's a reason why this old world design remains unchanged.

Weck Jars

Store homemade jams, preserves and ferments in classic Weck Jars. Also work as glass food storage for "salad in a jar" or that batch of soup or chili headed for the freezer.

Stackable Glass Jars by Anchor Hocking

With a bit more heft stackable containers by Anchor Hocking look and function beautifully as counter storage. Stack them vertically in narrow spaces.
