Eco-challenge #12 Results: Sippy Success!

01.25.10 Eco-challenge #12 Results: Sippy Success!

Straw Bottle

One of my favorite challenges so far. My sippy cup collection is looking better than ever! To remind you of this week’s task…

Eco-challenge #12: Replace unsafe sippy cups with non-toxic alternatives.

As a mom of two toddlers, there’s nothing more comforting to me than a solid sippy cup. A few weeks ago, I was at a dinner party where all of the kids (18mo-4yrs) were walking around with open cups. 18 MONTHS!?!?! I was on eggshells the entire night.  It was nervewracking!

Given my severe phobia of toddlers with open cups, you’d think I’d have a pretty stellar collection of sippys…WRONG! Before last week it pretty much consisted of about 20 severely chewed Elmo or Lightning McQueen Take and Toss cups. All BPA-free but flimsy and super easy to destroy and replace – destroy and replace. Not a good cycle for me, or the earth. So, with the exception of a few passable Nuby cups and some of Jack's deal breakers, I was pretty much starting over and happy about it.

Here are some of the new additions:

  • Thermos Stainless Steel Straw Bottle and Foogoo Sippy – Stainless steel, leak resistent  and solid. These can take a beating. Plus, Jack is fascinated by the fact he can hit a button the straw pops out. Ahh – the simple things in life.
  • KleanKanteen Stainless Steel Sippy and Sport Top– The Klean Kanteen sippy is a huge hit with me because on top of being safe (BPA, Phthalate, & PVC Free) it's virtually leak free. The boys however are OBSESSED with drinking out of my Klean Kanteen with the sport top. No worries though because you can interchange the lids. Love that!
  • thinkbaby and WeilBaby - I love these two because they look/feel alot like bottles. That means I can slot them in for the bedtime bottle once in a while and the boys don't even know. Will make things easier when the bottle fairy comes to take bottles away forever here in a few weeks, too. I also like the funky colors and shapes of the WeilBaby training cups. Very unique.

On a separate but related note...for those of you who have multiple toddlers running around the house you know it’s hard to keep the cups (and germs) straight.  Lately, I've been using these personalized non-toxic stretchy bands from Inchbug that slip right on the sippy cup, water bottle or whatever. Check out my recent review over at BabyCenter's Momformation.com.

OK - I'm off to go wash all my new sippys. Until next time...
