Eco-challenge #9: Time to ditch the toxic toys

Oh noooo....I'm so not prepared for this week's challenge!

Eco-challenge #9: The great toy makeover! In honor of Ready, Set, Go week, my task is to research and replace/recycle all unsafe toys with wheels in our toy box

In one week? They obviously haven’t seen my toy box. That challenge could take years!

Given the ridiculous attachment the boys have to their cars and trains, I can tell you right now this is not going to go well. In fact, I can almost assure total failure. (How’s that for positivity?!) I mean, how do you explain to toddlers that the majority of their favorite toys have suddenly disappeared? Ugh.

I know it’s worth it but I just don’t think I’m ready for the drama. They’re still working through their issues about the “mean paci-fairy” who stopped by while we were all fast asleep and swiped all of the pacifiers from the house a couple of weeks ago. Now this…

Ok – so if I’m going to do this, I need your help. Kristen and Katy have listed a few of their picks but I’d love to hear your suggestions too.

What safe toys do you recommend for little boys who are ALWAYS on the go?? Santa and I are counting on you!

Don’t forget to check the MightyNest blog and Facebook page this week for more information on great giveaways and deep discounts on toys that go zoom.

I second the endorsement of the Plan Toys wheeled items! My 2 1/2 year old wants to sleep with his bulldozer most nights, he loves it so much. They make so many awesome, sturdy toys in the "Ready, set, go" genre -- cars, trucks, airplanes, helicopters, trains...

I can't imagine the Thomas trains disappearing, I think I would forever damage my child's psyche; reminiscent of my childhood when I woke up one morning at was told Twinkles the cat went to a cat farm........

We have a lot of Plan Toys items - airport, doll house, parking garage, dolls, cars, trains.....I could go on. And it's really hard to beat the quality. My kids are a little old but I really like the new Sprig line of toys. Hape and Haba make great quality toys too. For my busy boy, we have a wobble deck, stomp rocket, small trampoline, and lots of ball (but I'm not totally confident that these are all toxin-free).

When we made the big transition from toys that made noise, had lots of lights and were plastic to the quality ones about 5 years ago, we just got rid of them all at once and replaced them with exciting new toys. The holidays could be a great time to do this.

I hope this helps...good luck!
