Homemade Vanilla Extract #MakeItMonday

Not only is homemade vanilla extract more delicious than store-bought, it's also far less expensive and free of extra ingredients. Even though some store-bought vanilla extract is labeled "pure," it can also contain corn syrup or sugar. Imitation vanilla (far different than the real stuff) contains artificial flavorings, corn syrup, and caramel color. Once you start making your own vanilla extract, you'll be convinced never to return to the costly store-bought version.

How to make your own vanilla extract

1. Buy your beans. It's more economical to buy these by the weight in a bulk bag. You'll need 6-8 beans per 8 oz bottle

2. Buy a glass bottle to store the extract. Consider buying a couple extras because these make the most thoughtful and well-received gifts! Plus, you'll be able to spontaneously "gift" a bottle when you need to.

3. Slice 6-8 organic vanilla beans lengthwise to reveal the inside of the beans. Place the cut beans in an 8 oz. glass bottle, cutting them in half if you need to make them fit.

4. Pour vodka of your choosing into the glass bottle using a funnel making sure to completely submerge the vanilla beans.

5. Cap tightly and shake gently.

6. Wait patiently as your vanilla extract deepens in color. Store in a cool dark place and shake occasionally.

ENJOY in your homemade baked goods, pancakes, smoothies and more!

*Reusing vanilla beans: It's ok to repurpose the beans for an additional batch although they'll need some help with a few new ones. It might make sense to cut these in half to keep track of which ones are new.
