In this guide:
- Why mineral sunscreens are the safest choice
- Our picks of the best mineral sunscreens
2. Look for active ingredients that are mineral
Conventional sunscreens provide protection by absorbing UV light. They are designed to be absorbed into your body. The concern is that there are concerning ingredients in conventional sunscreen that are being absorbed into your body. For example, Oxybenzone is a common ingredient. Research has shown it can be easily absorbed into your skin and can masquerade as estrogen, which links to hormone disruption. It can also cause cell damage by creating free radicals when exposed to the sun. Please read the labels carefully. Other chemicals to avoid on the active ingredients list include benzophenone, octinoxate, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene.
We prefer mineral sunscreens because they are safe, non-toxic and work by reflecting UV light. They form a barrier on your skin’s surface so they’re immediately effective upon application. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the active ingredients most commonly found in mineral sunscreens. Brands like ThinkSport, Badger and Goddess Garden use smaller particles of these minerals so they go on smoothly and easier.
3. Say "no" to Nano particles
Not all mineral sunscreens are created equal. "Nano particles" refers to the size of the minerals and we recommend avoiding them in your sunscreen. These particles have different physical, biological and chemical properties than their larger counterparts and carry an additional health risk. Nano particles have an easier chance to be absorbed and can generate free radicals, which can cause cell damage. Particles that are 100nm or larger are considered safe and labeled NON NANO.
4. Scan for inactive ingredients, too
Avoid Vitamin A, often labeled as “retinyl palmitate” or “retinol". Federal studies have linked this inactive ingredient (also found in lip products and skin lotions), to the development of skin tumors and lesions when exposed to the sun. Other inactive ingredients to avoid are parabens, phthalates, phenoxyethanol and PEGs (polyethylene glycol).
