Clean out a closet

Eeeny Meeny Miny Mo -- Some of this stuff has got to go! But where? If you hate to throw things away it might not be a sign of being a pack rat (whew) it might just be because you’re trying to be a good global citizen and keep things out of the landfill. Good news:  there are tons of clear conscious alternatives to throwing things away: donate, recycle, repurpose, freecycle.

Start by pulling everything out and making 2 piles: Stuff you’ve used in the last 6 months, and things you haven’t touched (gone). Now separate the gone pile into 3 piles: Donate, Recycle, Freecycle. (Realistically, there are going to be a few things you have to throw away -- like those old plastic covers from an electric toothbrush you no longer own, so don’t sweat it).

Even if you have curbside recycling in your area, you might have to search a bit to find recycling options for things like electronics and styrofoam. For resources search earth911. Many things that might not be appropriate for recycling or donating can quickly find a home through freecycle.org

And here’s a cool tip: When you hang clothes in a newly cleaned closet, turn the hangers backward. Every time you wear something, hang it back up right and in 6 months everything that’s still on a hanger facing the wrong way is out of there!
