Healthy Reusable Gear Picnic

Let’s think about this for a second: do you really want to create tons of waste, eat from plastic containers that could be damaging your health, or risk the chance of glassware breaking while you’re supposed to be having a nice, relaxing picnic? I think we can do better than this. - Betsy, DIY Natural

There’s a lot to love about picnics: Soaking up the sunshine or relaxing in the shade on a beautiful day, sharing a basketful of goodies with family or friends, flicking bugs off your food... there’s a certain charm to it all. Except for one thing: trash. Sure, it’s easy to throw a bunch of  pre-packaged food and beverages, paper plates and napkins, plastic cups and utensils into a bag and go. But with just a little extra thought, you can plan an eco friendly picnic that’s totally waste free.

Join Betsy at the blog DIY Natural in pledging to plan more eco-friendly picnics this summer, which she defines as having:

  • No plastics – plastic production is unhealthy for the environment, plastics absorb food odors, and chemicals in plastics break down and leach into foods

  • No paper products – too much waste is involved

  • Non-leaking food storage containers - made from safe materials

  • Lightweight items – glass weighs down the picnic basket and can break

  • Reusables – reduce waste and save money in the long run

Read what happened when the lightbulb went off and Betsy realized that stainless steel and bamboo were perfectly safe, durable, and healthy choices for a waste-free picnic. Pledge to follow her lead and go waste free on your next picnic and support your school in our current challenge!
